Portsmouth Children to Embark on School Trip of a Lifetime!
(But we need your help to make this trip a reality. If you would like to support this project and would like to contribute please click here.)
10 children from King Richard School in Paulsgrove, a deprived area of Portsmouth, have been selected for the opportunity to travel to East Africa to participate in a valuable community work and sports coaching scheme.
The school plans to travel to Kenya where the pupils will visit Nakuru, the fourth largest town in a heavily deprived part of the country. Here they will experience Kenyan life and culture working in an orphanage, a school and run after school sports coaching sessions for children of primary and junior school age who are not privy to the facilities and infrastructure we have here in the UK.
140 pupils from years 10 and 11 put their names forward as wanting to undertake this experience. In order to select which students should go, they were asked to write a short essay on their reasons for wanting to go. The students were asked to produce a one sided letter outlining why they wanted to go on the trip, what they believed they could offer and also what they would hope to gain from such an experience.
King Richard School is in its fourth year as a specialist art college. It serves a local housing estate on the outskirts of Portsmouth in an area of significant social and economic deprivation. The school offers a wide diversity of courses and personalised learning and the trip to Kenya represents a first trip abroad for many of the students.
Two teachers and a coach provided and sponsored by The Community Sports Foundation and our delivery partner Planet Sport will accompany the pupils who are jetting off in October. Funding has come predominantly from the school reserves and also from the Portsmouth Lord Mayor's Appeal. We are keen to take more pupils if we can raise the required funds and would be extreamly greatful if anyone wishes to offer their support..
